ABOUT KRISTAL

Building on Progress, Leading with Vision

Kristal Orozco is a proud mother, educator, and former community college student. She began her academic journey at Pasadena City College, where she earned her associate’s degree before transferring to Whittier College to complete her bachelor’s degree in history. She later earned a master’s degree in Higher Education Administration from Loyola Marymount University.

Throughout her career, Orozco has returned to her roots as an educator, teaching at schools in the Montebello Unified School District. Her experiences as a first-generation college student and a working mother have shaped her understanding of the challenges students face today. These experiences drive her passion for creating equitable outcomes for all students.

Kristal is committed to increasing student access to counseling services, mental health resources, and social service programs, ensuring that all students have the support they need to succeed. In addition to her role as trustee, she is a wife and mother to two young children, Roman (10) and Ximena (5), and lives with her family in Santa Fe Springs.

Key Accomplishments

Navigated the Pandemic

  • Led the college through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic while ensuring that students could continue their education smoothly.
 

Ensured Campus Safety

  • Implemented safety protocols during reopening, prioritizing the health and well-being of students and staff.
 

CEO/Superintendent Hire

  • Played a pivotal role in hiring a new CEO/Superintendent to lead Rio Hondo College into the future with visionary leadership.

Addressed Student Housing Needs

  • Secured funding for solutions to address student housing, recognizing the link between stable housing and student success.
 

Established College Police Department

  • Created the Rio Hondo College Police Department to ensure the campus remains a secure and safe environment for learning.
 

DEIA Commitment

  • Prioritized diversity and inclusion through policies that celebrate a diverse campus community and provide equitable opportunities.

As your Rio Hondo College Trustee, Kristal is focused on addressing the core challenges and opportunities that shape the future of our college. Her platform is built on the principles of student success, community engagement, and equity. By focusing on these key areas, She will continue to support the growth and progress of Rio Hondo College for the benefit of all.

Student Success

  • Continue increasing success rates in transfer-level English and Math.
  • Support efforts to improve enrollment.
  • Strengthen programs that prepare students for the workforce and transfer.

Facilities Improvement

  • Ensure facility improvements are completed to provide a safe, modern learning environment.
  • Advocate for sustainable, eco-friendly upgrades to reduce the college’s environmental footprint while enhancing the campus experience.

Community Engagement

  • Continue supporting the learning centers to benefit not only students but community members through classes and resources.
  • Enhance Rio Hondo’s role as a community hub for lifelong learning.

Equity and Inclusion

  • Champion Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA) to make Rio Hondo College an inclusive place for all.
  • Advocate for more counselors, mental health services, and social service navigators to provide students with holistic support.
